The new 580m long dual lane Kopu Bridge is designed to improve safety and reduce, by up to an hour, holiday travel times between Auckland and Thames. It will also boost the region’s economy and tourism making access to the Coromandel Peninsula significantly easier. This infrastructure project was fast tracked by the government and Steelpipe’s ability to meet this new timeline was important in winning the contract.
A project of this scale where exact pipe quantities are dependent on piling conditions, and cannot be determined in advance, meant it was important for Steelpipe to manage the overall quantities and delivery scheduling to ensure the client was not left short or with large overruns.
Steelpipe supplied over six kilometres of piling for the replacement bridge in lengths of up to 24 metres.
This project highlights some of the advantages of using a local manufacturer: the flexibility of being able to readily produce additional pipe with less time delay to the project; being able to modify pile type during the contract to suit driving conditions; and matching manufacture to the client’s onsite schedule so that deliveries and payment are more closely aligned to their project restraints.
We were also able to provide our client with protection from steel price volatility.
