The Inner Harbour at Fremantle has been deepened from 13m to 14.6m to accommodate the arrival of larger ships now and into the future. Alongside this program of work, port berths were also strengthened to accommodate the expectation of larger vessels.
To ensure that Fremantle Port Authority was able to continue to meet shipping requirements during this program of work, Berth 10 on North Quay and Berth H on Victoria Quay needed to be upgraded. As part of the refurbishment, and deepening projects Steelpipe manufactured and supplied over 10,000 tonnes of 610mm, 813mm and 914mm diameter piles complete with heavy gauge pile shoes and clutching system.
This was the first time a local manufacturer had participated in a project of this size and the ability of Steelpipe to work closely with the project team, providing manufacture, delivery, storage and back up supply in case of changes to delivery or timing, quickly showed the value of using a local supplier.
Timing was critical within this active port environment. Steelpipe worked closely with local fabricators to ensure that the delivery of completed piles aligned with the program of the piling contractor.
